Discover Omodos, a traditional wine village in the Troodos foothills, known for its Holy Cross Monastery, stone streets, cosy tavernas and authentic Cypriot charm.

A holiday in Cyprus becomes much richer when you leave the coast for a day and explore the villages of the Troodos foothills. One of the most beautiful and memorable places for such a trip is Omodos — a traditional wine village with stone streets, a historic monastery, cosy tavernas and a peaceful mountain atmosphere.
From Villa Nadezhda in Paphos, Omodos is a wonderful day-trip destination. It offers a completely different side of Cyprus: slower, older, quieter and deeply connected with local tradition.

Omodos is located in the Limassol district, in the Troodos mountain range, at around 800 metres above sea level. It belongs to the famous wine-producing area known as Krassohoria, or the wine villages of Cyprus. The village is especially known for its cobbled square, stone-built houses, local wineries, old wine press and the Monastery of Timios Stavros — the Holy Cross Monastery.

This is the kind of place where you do not need to hurry. The best way to enjoy Omodos is simply to walk through its narrow streets, look at the old houses, stop for coffee, taste local wine and enjoy the rhythm of village life.

The Holy Cross Monastery
At the heart of Omodos stands the Monastery of Timios Stavros, also known as the Monastery of the Holy Cross. It is one of the most important historical and religious landmarks in the village.
According to local tradition, the monastery existed before the arrival of Saint Helen in Cyprus in 327 AD, although the exact date of its foundation is unknown. The village may even have developed around the monastery over time. Historical references connect the monastery with Saint Helen and with relics traditionally associated with the Holy Cross.
The monastery is not only a religious site. It is also an architectural and cultural landmark. Its stone courtyard, arches, church interior, icons and quiet atmosphere make it one of the most meaningful places to visit in Omodos.
Even if you are not especially interested in church history, the monastery is worth seeing. It gives the village a sense of depth and continuity, reminding visitors that Cyprus is not only about beaches and sunshine, but also about centuries of faith, tradition and local identity.

Omodos has preserved much of its traditional character. Around the main square and side streets, you will find old stone houses, small shops, wineries, local products and handmade goods.

The village is strongly connected with wine culture. A medieval wine press in Omodos is evidence of the long tradition of wine production in the area. Today, visitors can still enjoy local wines, grape products, traditional sweets and village-style hospitality.

It is a good place to buy small gifts from Cyprus: local wine, zivania, commandaria, honey, sweets, handmade lace or traditional bakery products.

One of the best reasons to visit Omodos is lunch.
The village has many cosy restaurants and tavernas, especially around the central square and nearby streets. They are ideal for a relaxed meal after walking through the village and visiting the monastery.

This is the place to try traditional Cypriot food: meze, grilled halloumi, village salad, souvlaki, kleftiko, homemade dips, local bread and a glass of Cypriot wine. The atmosphere is usually warm and informal — stone walls, shaded terraces, wooden tables and the feeling that time has slowed down.
For families, Omodos is also convenient because the village is compact. You can walk, eat, rest and explore without needing a strict plan.
Omodos is especially worth visiting if you rent a car during your stay at Villa Nadezhda. The drive itself is part of the experience: you leave the coast behind and gradually enter a different landscape of hills, vineyards and mountain villages.
A good day-trip plan could look like this:
After a day in the mountains, coming back to the comfort and greenery of the villa feels especially pleasant.

Omodos is not a place for a quick photo stop. It is a place to slow down and feel another side of Cyprus.
Here you can see a historic monastery, walk through traditional stone streets, taste local wine, enjoy a long lunch and experience the atmosphere of a real mountain village.
For guests staying at Villa Nadezhda, Omodos is one of the most rewarding trips from Paphos — a beautiful combination of history, culture, food and authentic Cypriot charm.
